Role of Media in Social Media Examined at Conference
NJSocialMedia.com presents June 18 program in Somerset
SOMERSET – If you need to communicate – as a corporation, local business, news organization, for government, as part of a civic group or even as an individual – you have two choices: Change the way you convey information or lose most of your audience.
Affordable high-tech mobile and portable devices have made it easy to publish news in real-time, access entertainment on-demand, search for products and services, and share opinions using new web tools, phone applications and online platforms, explained Eva Abreu, founder and publisher of NJSocialMedia.com.
"People no longer want to be passive consumers of information; they want to initiate, pontificate, create, collaborate and express themselves quickly and instantaneously, using various different forms of multimedia channels," Abreu said.
"It's the age of do-it-yourself content creation. Every person is now a newsmaker, openly broadcasting the story of their life on a minute-by-minute basis, through words, pictures, video and music," she said. "People are on the lookout for the proverbial soapbox on your street corner (in the form of social media) so they can share their story, but if you don't have that platform set up, they will quickly move on."
To show how businesses, organizations and individuals have adapted and effectively use social media – the web-based technologies that encourage public postings, dialogue and community-building – NJSocialMedia.com will present a day-long conference titled “The Role of Media in Social Media” June 18 at the Crowne Plaza hotel, in the Somerset section of Franklin Township.
The conference, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., is designed for new and experienced users of social media to discuss the creation of content and media found on sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, BlogTalkRadio and other platforms. Experts from public and private sectors, including staff from local news media, will talk about how social media has changed the way they communicate and what the future holds. Panelists will also discuss strategy planning, implementation, monitoring and best practices.
“This is the future – or actually, this is now,” Abreu said. “There are millions of people worldwide using social media every day. You are either involved or you are on your way to becoming irrelevant. I think this conference will present a good overview of the state of social media, in the state of New Jersey. New users can learn from others who have lived through the technology learning curve. Experienced users can further their knowledge and broaden their network of connections.”
Scheduled speakers include: David Mathison (author of “Be the Media”), Alan Levy (CEO of BlogTalkRadio), Gary Vaynerchuk (known for his daily internet video shows on Wine Library TV and author of “Crush It!”). Registration is $149 by June 5 and $179 by June 15. Late and walk-in registration is $199.
The conference will include a continental breakfast, buffet lunch, speed networking sessions, panelist presentations and breakout discussion groups. Participants will receive a copy of the books “Be The Media” and “Crush It!”
